Teaching Tolerance
The theme of
this Integrated Thematic Unit (ITU) is teaching tolerance by investigating the
political and social climate which surrounded the 1950 Los Angeles culture. We
felt that this was important because at our school site we have a large
population of white and Hispanic students. What this has created is a school
culture where racial stereotypes and assumptions are common. Not only have
that but the cultures clashed in a variety of ways such as clothing, music, and
customs. Because of this we choose to talk about an area in LA where these two
cultures collided in much the same way and for many of the same reasons.
This Integrated Thematic Unit will bring together English, History, and Spanish, in order to help students gain a better understanding not only of different cultures and traditions but also to help them gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be culturally tolerant.
The theme of this unit will cover many different aspect of the Zoot Suit culture.
