Social StudiesDay 1 - The Zoot Suit Riots of the 1940’s.
Standard - CA Content Standards - 11.7.8 & 11.8.1 Objective - Students will be able to gain an understand of what the social and economic conditions were like for the minorities back at home during WWII by comparing and contrasting their classroom notes to their own research. Activity - Intro: Students will start class by answering an opinion quickwrite: “In your opinion, during the hard times of WWII did all of the everyday people work hard and got along? Do you think during times of war, Americans were able to aside their own thoughts about certain races and individuals and work together for a greater America?” Through: Next we will work on the PowerPoint notes covering Chapter 11 Section 3. Students will take notes and raise their hands when they need assistance or need clarification. Conclude: I will end the lesson by explaining their homework that will be due by the beginning of next class. I will explain to the students, if they do not complete the homework they will not be able to participate in Monday’s lesson. Homework: Students will go home and research/Google ‘Zoot Suit Riots.’ They will find three different websites that mention the riots and take 2-4 sentences of notes for each website. Once they have completed their sentences they will share the top two most surprising results they found via Twitter. Assessment - Students will answer in their own opinions and turn in their quickwrites. Next, students will listen and take notes on the PowerPoint slides. These notes are to be turned in on the day of their unit test. SpanishDay 1- Who is Luis Valdez? What were the Zoot Suit Riots?
Standard: Content 3.1 Students address concrete and factual topics related to the immediate and external environment, including: b. Historical and cultural figures, stereotypes j. Significant historical events Objective: After students watch a clip of the Zoot Suit Riot play they will be able to read, share, and understand what they read about Luis Valdez, Los Angles in the 1940s events of the Sleepy Lagoon case in Spanish during Jigsaw reading. Activity: Students will jigsaw readings in small groups. Students will discuss key topics of each reading in small groups and present them to the class. Assessment: Students will answer questions about readings.

Day 2
Standard: Literary Response and Analysis 3.4 Determine characters' traits by what the characters say about themselves in narration, dialogue, dramatic monologue and soliloquy Objective: Cognitive: Using a short story previously read students will identify Specific Charter traits found in a story and learn how to support those traits by writing down examples, which will show those traits to a reader. Activity: Students will be given a worksheet and asked to find a four character traits of someone in a story we have read in class. They will then find a quote of the story that gives an example of the character trait Assessment: Formative: (informal) I will walk around the room and assess how students are making connections between traits and evidence. (Formal) I will then collect their papers and assess their learning. Social StudiesDay 2 - The Zoot Suit Riots of the 1940’s.
Standards - CA Content Standards - 11.7.8 & 11.8.1. Objective - Students will be able to gain an understand of what the social and economic conditions were like for the minorities back at home during WWII by comparing and contrasting their classroom notes to their own research. Activity - Intro: Students will start class by taking turn sharing and discussing their search results and why they choose certain facts to tweet about. Through: Next, the students will arrange the classroom so as there can be a proper debate atmosphere. After the class is split in half the students will take turns bring up points for why their participants in the riots (Minorities v Military) acted in self-defense. The teacher will be there to moderate the two sides of the debate as well as to mark off who did the research and who is participating. Conclude: The lesson will end with the teacher resetting the class to its original state and reinforcing that both sides brought up great point. Class will end with me reiterate to the students, the seriousness of war and how individuals can act when they get together in a group. Homework: The students will not have homework tonight because of their great sportsmanship in class. Assessment - The students will be assessed on their research by making tallies of how often students participate during the active academic debate on the two parties involved in the Zoot Suit Riots. SpanishDay 2-Service Learning incorporating Zoot Suit
Standards: Structures 2.2 Identify similarities and differences in the sentence-level elements (morphology or syntax or both) of the languages the students know. Objective: After students have listened to some music from the 1940s swing era they will begin to write ways they can help their community to help others not feel segregated from social norms in school. Activity: Students will learn to write business letters, or create a public service announcement to help them provide students with suits for prom. Students will learn the basics of writing a business: including letter format, persuasive terms to help students who cannot afford suits for prom. They will also be asked to create a poster to showcase the service learning project (who, where, what, when, why, how and a reading to support their cause). Students will create a Public Service Announcement which will have the zoot suit style, purpose, as well as a written pitch using one of readings from class to support the service learning and presentation to class at the end. Assessment: Students will be assigned groups and they must work together and choose to write a business letter or create a public service announcement in Spanish. The end result will be the format of business letter, poster or the PSA maintaining correct use of grammar as well vocabulary. |

Standard: Literary Response and Analysis 3.3 Analyze the interactions between main and subordinate characters in a literary text (e.g. internal and external conflicts, motivations, relationships, influences) and explain the way those interactions affect the plot Objective: By using facts found in the play Zoot suit Students will be able to defend and argue points based on factual evidence to pre scripted questions. Activity: Students will engage in a Socratic seminar in which students will discuss the trail in zoot suit riot. Students will be asked to discuss the Media's roll on the charters and use facts from the text to make their points. Assessment: Formative After the Socratic seminar I will ask students to write a paragraph detailing the important aspects of the trial and what they learned during the discussion. SpanishDay 3
StandardSettings 2.1 Participate in age-appropriate cultural or language-use opportunities outside the classroom. Objective: Students will able to present their business letters or PSA announcement to community.Students will also listen to a popular song by Lalo Guerrero. Activity: In their respective groups students will research ways to publish their work on the web, to local business, to school, the newspaper etc. Assessment: Students will fill out a planning guide as to how they will show they work to the community in written form. Students will also write a page reflection on the Zoot Suit Riot, or PSA or business letter project and their opinion of how the song portrays the Zoot Suiters. They write it these readings, activities, or song has affected their perspective of others and how this experience effected them positively or negatively and why. |
